Just this past week I visited the Compass show in NYC's Puck building. It featured shoe designers and companies from all over the world displaying their latest collections for all to see. I stopped by the Timberland booth and took a short video of their Made to Order initiative. Here is how an all leather loafer gets hand stitched. Check out the video at the bottom of the post for the process in action.
Each pattern piece is pre-cut from leather and holes are punched where the thread will be hand-stitched.
Each shoe size has a separate last, made to ensure proper fit.
And then each leather piece is clamped so it doesn't move, while the skillful hands pass two different waxed threads through each hole in opposite directions.
In and out, in and out, the thread gets passed until all parts are are attached together, and the shoe is finished.

I personally have a love/hate relationship with fashion week. I love seeing the shows, but I don't enjoy the mad rush and the stiletto crowds, especially in freezing weather. Tell a fashionista she can't get into a fashion show, even though she has a standing invite and see the inner Omarosa revealed. Let's say Divas are everywhere! I'm carrying a video camera this time around...
We didn't quite get the epic snowstorm that was headed towards the US East Coast, but not everybody was that lucky. Still, quite freezing and somewhat snowie here in NYC. What I wouldn't give to be back in the Domincan Republic, basking in 85 degree weather and heading to the beach! On the brighter side, fashion week is coming up and I'm looking forward to photographing fabulous designers and crazy outfits!
Let's revisit these photos next week after I shoot some dressed up dandies and fashionistas and see if they remind us of anybody.

The Stockholm Fashion Week just wrapped up three days of intensely packed runway shows and exciting events and I am digging through countless photos to bring you some exciting images. Naturally I am turning first to the work of Fashion Design students on the runways. This time it's Beckmans College of Design. Here are some photos of second year fashion students collections from the only non-commercial fashion
show at Fashion Week by Berns. Naturally the collections ranged from fantastical to ridiculous, with very few sensible designs, but as long as we have lady Gaga and acrobatics filled Grammys, design students will dream of dressing the stars and keep churning out bizarre pantless garments. At least there is a consistency within the concepts for each collection and students are sticking to their guns!
Fourteen students present
individual collections of 3-5 outfits, with a focus on knitting and
knitwear. The students have created their own materials, ranging from
industrial experiments to handcrafted structures. Each student has been
given creative freedom to explore his and her designer persona, and the
result is as diverse as it all holds the high standard of Sweden's most honored fashion education.

You might remember the Spring Summer '10 OntFront collection for the modern-day street cavalier from this post. If you don't, then you should know that OntFront is an Amsterdam-based brand, founded by the
passionate fashion entrepreneurs Liza Koifman and Tomas Overtoom. The clothing is for the bad boy and the gentleman. It is tailored and streetwise, hence their under title "Sidewalk Tailoring". For their fall/winter 2010-11 menswear collection OntFront proudly presented ‘Shift Gear', during the Amsterdam International Fashion Week on January 30, 2010. The strong 68 piece collection was inspired by sleek Italian sports cars and featured leather jackets, driving gloves and tailored suits as well as graphic sweaters. A touch of beauty and just enough of a disturbed sensation made me featured Christina Lopera's illustrations and dolls, as suggested by Krasi Genova. I have to admit dolls scare me more than clowns! How about you?

I like seeing a spectacular presentation with fantastical jewels and that's what Bibi van der Velden delivered on Sunday Jan 31 at Amsterdam Int Fashion Week. Using her knowledge as a sculptor she created museum worthy pieces and an exciting runway show with immaculate lighting.

The Amsterdam Fashion week just wrapped up and here are a few exciting looks that caught my attention.
Jantaminau - Although this dramatic collection presented one too many Gaga-ish pantless looks walking down the runway, the overall concept was cohesive. Lots of glam girls and bright starlets will be happy to shine in one of Jan Jantaminau's dresses for a party out on the town. Strong shapes and plenty of construction details convinced me that there is a bright future for this Nordic label.
